Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in Coral Reef AssessmentImpact assessment of Human activities on reef ecosystemCoral reefs are large underwater structures composed of the skeletons of colonial marine invertebrates called coral. The corals have a symbiotic, or mutually beneficial, relationship with the zooxanthellae. These algae live inside the coral polyp's body where they photosynthesize to produce energy for themselves and the polyps. The coral polyps, in turn, provide a home and carbon dioxide for the algae. Zooxanthellae also provide the coral with their lively colors as most coral polyp bodies are clear and colorless without zooxanthellae. 
Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth. About 25% of all known marine species rely on coral reefs for shelter, food and breeding. Image EnhancementLet’s start to understand enhancement, if you will see below picture, one can understand importance of enhancement for a satellite image. Figure ‘a’ is before enhancing image and figure ‘b’ after enhancement process performed on satellite image.

Therefore Image enhancement used to improve the quality of satellite image for better interpretation and classification. There are some basic methods such as brightness and contrast change to some specific statistical methods such as gamma, standard deviation and linear stretching etc used for image enhancement. 
This process becomes very important, when satellite image have noise and haze. For such issue one need to use enhancement procedure provided in most of image processing software

DIP- Image Display and Band CombinationIn the previous article of image processing, it is understood requirement of layer stacking for a satellite image. Through layer stacking, satellite image, which acquired/downloaded as individual bands can be displayed as true color composite or false color composite using multi band. This article will help to understand about display a satellite image as well as process to make false color composite through band combination. Display Satellite Image in ErdasAfter layer stacking i.e. combined all bands in single layer, now color composite is ready for display and analysis.

The File menu in the viewer can be used to open an image and applying basic viewer functions. If you move the cursor over the icons, you see a short indication of the function in the lower left corner of the viewer.
